BOSTON – Six standout student-athletes who have displayed excellence both academically and athletically throughout their collegiate careers have been named 2021-22 America East Winter Scholar-Athletes. The honorees, were announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon.
2021-22 America East Winter Scholar-Athletes
Nathan Johnson, UMBC, Jr. - Men's Basketball
- Has a perfect 4.00 GPA.
- Majoring in financial economics.
- America East Commissioner's Honor Roll.
- Played in al 32 games for UMBC, including the America East Championship game.
Anne Simon, Maine, Jr. - Men's Basketball
- Has a 3.83 GPA majoring in psychology.
- America East All-Academic Selection.
- America East Player and Defensive Player of the Year in 2021-22.
Ian Horstkamp-Vinekar, NJIT, So. - Men's Swimming & Diving
- Has a perfect 4.0 GPA majoring in chemical engineering.
- 2022 America East All-Academic choice.
- Earned five medals at America East Championship.
Anna Metzler, New Hampshire, Sr. - Women's Swimming & Diving
- Has a 3.95 GPA pursuing a degree in biomedical science.
- Second-straight AE Scholar-Athlete honor.
- America East Women's Swimming & Diving Elite 18 Award winner.
- Won a pair of individual titles at the America East Championship and qualified for NCAAs.
Emily MacKay, Binghamton, Gr. – Women’s Indoor Track & Field
- Graduated with a 3.56 GPA in psychology.
- Has a 3.95 GPA pursuing MBA.
- Third Scholar-Athlete honor
- Five-time All-American.
Dan Schaffer Binghamton, Gr. – Men’s Indoor Track & Field
- Graduated with a 3.577 GPA in electircal engineering.
- Won the mile event at the America East Championship.
- America East All-Academic choice.
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the winter season including men’s and women’s basketball, men's and women's swimming & diving and men's and women's indoor track & field. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a projected starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.
Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
